For the past couple weeks, Onceler began to notice that his reflection was changing.
It was small things, at first; the shade of his eyes turning green, the vest seemingly morphing into a jacket, his fedora turning into a top hat. Even his gloves turned a money-colored green. He wondered if it was stress. After all, he had been trying so hard to sell his Thneed in Greenville, but wasn’t having any luck. He was beginning to think that the Lorax was right and he should give up.
But then, one night as he was settling down, his reflection smirked at him.
Onceler did a double-take, eyes wide. The reflection was totally different now. In the mirror was a monstrous looking man, his teeth sharp and glinting, and there were dark bug-eyed shades over his greenish eyes. He was wearing the top hat and green suite that had kept showing up in the mirror out of the corner of his eye the past couple weeks, including the emerald gloves.
“Hello, Oncie, baby.“ Onceler gaped as a gloved hand gripped the edges of his mirror, pulling himself from the glass. “You don’t look very happy to see me.”
The grey-claded man backed away, tripping over his own feet and falling on to his bed. The man was completely out of his mirror, slightly taller than Onceler and his skin slightly paler. Other than that, he looked exactly like him.
“Who…are you?“ Onceler asked, flinching when the man leaned forward, their noses brushing.
“I thought it’d be obvious. I’m you, Oncie. I’m The Onceler.”
Onceler blinked, leaning back until he hit the wall of his cottage. “‘The’ Onceler? But how…I’m Onceler.“
“You’re Onceler, but I’m The Onceler.” The man grinned, running an unnaturally clawed glove along his jaw. “I’m everything you’re not.“
Onceler frowned, still confused. “So…why were you in my mirror?”
The paler man sighed in annoyance, rolling his green eyes. “You’re not too bright, are you, Oncie? I’m your other half. Your mirrored image. I live in that mirror, in any reflection.“
“A-any?” Onceler yelped when he felt those claws on his chest, tightly gripping his shirt. “What do you want?“
The Onceler chuckled. “Think, Oncie. You hate yourself, loath how worthless you think you are. I happen to love myself. And what better way to express that then with my mirror image.”
“Whoa, whoa!“ Onceler managed to get around him, falling to the floor. “I-I’m flattered, Mr. The Onceler, but I have no interest in my reflection.”
“Oh, I’m sure I can convince you.“ The Onceler replied, grinning as he suddenly grabbed the others ankle, eyes flashing as he easily dragged him to the mirror. “This might feel a bit odd.”
Onceler scrambled against his hold, kicking and scratching at his floor. He felt a hand at his back, being lifted and thrown into the mirror. The Onceler quickly jumped through as well, taking a moment to quickly break said mirror, making sure that his innocent half couldn’t return here.
He had waited too long for this.
