So I found voltron recently and I was waiting until I was all caught up with the series before actually getting into the fandom. Your blog was one of the first ones I found and I saw you ship Sheith, and it was one of the ships I initially liked, but now I’m a little confused because of season 6 with the whole “you’re my brother” thing. So I wanted to ask, like, do you think that Sheith could become canon? I’m not sure if I ship it or not anymore (No need to answer this ask if you don’t want to)

Hello! First of all I’m so excited I was one of the first blogs you found. That’s such an honor and it makes me feel like I’m really apart of the fandom. This is a totally fine ask and I have no problem answering it so don’t worry ❤

As for your ask, it’s totally fine if you don’t ship it anymore. I know there were a couple other Sheith shippers that were kinda “ehhh” about the ship after this season though admittedly for most of us it’s actually just fueled the ship since it’s shown us how deep and healthy their bond is for both of them.

Shiro and Keith being brothers is still just a headcanon though. So if you’re worried about it being incest (whether adopted or otherwise) you don’t need to. But I still totally understand you being uncomfortable with it anyway! Like I said you don’t HAVE to ship anything and you can not like a ship for any reason or for no reason at all.

Also if it makes you feel any better, there was a really great post from some gay/bi people explaining how when they were younger they called their crushes “like a sister/brother to me” only to find out later on that what they were feeling was actually attraction to someone of the same gender, but were unaware at the time. I’ll try to find it in a second. But as someone with similar experiences when I was a young little gay, it’s very easy for me to view the “you’re my brother” line like that.

Also remember that other unrelated characters have referred to each other as siblings despite them not being related. (I think Lanc3 in s1?) As of now the only canon sibling we have are Matt and Pidge.

EDIT: here it is!! (some text is NSFW)

On to your actual question though omfg I’m sorry this is so long and bless you if you’ve actually read all this, on whether or not Sheith can ever become canon: I don’t know.

I know that people who work on the show (don’t remember who, don’t have links, if someone wants to add sources I would really appreciate it) have said they would like to have lgbt representation. To what extent they want that representation, I’m not sure.

Since VLD is on netflix and not tv, I think there’s more wiggle room as to what they’re allowed to show regarding lgbt characters. However, it’s still a kid’s show, and you know how some parents are regarding lgbt stuff. Also m/m relationships tend to get more backlash from homophobic parents that f/f relationships, largely because f/f relationships can be written off by homophobes as platonic. (which is a whole other issue that I’m not going to get into because this ask is long enough as it is)

Like…. I can’t think of a single example of an m/m romantic relationship in a kid’s show that isn’t just unnamed background characters or characters that aren’t a part of the main cast. So Sheith (or any other m/m ship) becoming canon would be huge.

I don’t know if they will. I think anything is possible. I find it very difficult to believe that the showrunners would introduce a love interest for either of them this late into the series. It’s possible the lgbt rep they’re talking about will end up just being some background characters. Or Coran and some unnamed guy we never get to see. Or Pidge meeting a girl. Or it could be Sheith.

For me personally? I like to be realistic. The end of this season was already more than I could have hoped for regarding Sheith. I was actually in tears at the “I love you” line. So I’m not counting on it being canon. If it is, well, it’ll be a happy surprise.
